2 Simple Traps To Get Rid Of Household Pests

cockroach brownRoaches, fleas, and ants. Maybe even termites if you’re really unlucky and someone has placed a voodoo curse on your house.  For every one of these pests you see out in the open, you just know there’s a dozen more just waiting in hiding. (P.S. if you spot a roach in your house during the daytime, that means you have a serious, and I do mean, serious infestation on your hands). So it’s quite pointless to take a rolled up newspaper and go searching under every rook and cranny to smite them like Zeus, although smashing a bug so hard with a rolled up newspaper that it turns from three dimensional to two dimensional is indeed one of the simple pleasures of life.

So what’s a man (or woman, we don’t discriminate) to do then? Contact a professional pest removal service? While that’s definitely a highly effective option, it does come with a cost, a high monetary cost that is. If you’re a baller and can afford it, more power to you! However, if you are more of an average Joe or Jane and don’t have hundreds of dollars to spare on a whim, then check out these two simple homemade pest traps that will barely make a dent in your bank account, but will make a large dent in the numbers of pests you have in your house!

Trap #1: Acidic Balls of Death

While acidic balls of death sounds like a great name for a band, it is also a highly effective way to lure your unwelcome house guests to their death. First, you need to get boric acid, which despite its name is actually a type of powder and is also easily found (cheaply too) in most hardware stores. While it is extremely toxic to insects (both when ingested and also upon contact), it is mostly harmless to humans (many eye drops use boric acid) unless in very large quantities. That’s the killer, now for the lure. You’ll need the following ingredients to make your deadly balls. Note: these are most effective for roaches but will kill any pests that eat them. If this still doesn’t work, try this effective cockroach bait which will definitely get rid of all roaches in your house in under a week!

Trap Ingredients

Boric acid (8 ounces)

Sugar (1/8 cup)

Flour (1/2 cup)

Onion (1/2 an onion)

Shortening (1/4 cup)

Preparation Steps

  1. First mix the shortening and the sugar.
  2. Add in the rest of the dry ingredients.
  3. Add water slowly until the consistency of the mixture is sufficiently dough-like.
  4. Separate the deadly dough into small balls, approximately an eighth of an inch in diameter and leave them in places where roaches would likely venture.

Trap #2: Acidic Paste

This version of the boric acid trap works better for ants, which are actually more attracted to sweet stuff compared to roaches. This trap is also a little cleaner, as you can place it conveniently in a jar. Note that depending on the species of ant, you may need to change the ingredients a bit. Some ants prefer the sweet stuff, some prefer fat or grease (if the ants in your home are these type, use bacon grease, as the lure; turns out everybody really does love bacon). Fortunately, most of the ants that live indoors do like sugar and this trap will be highly effective against them; it is only those large outdoor ants such as harvester or fire ants that are less affected by boric acid traps

Trap Ingredients

5% boric acid solution (1 cup)

Peanut butter (1 cup)

Honey (1 tablespoon)

Preparation Steps

  1. In order to create a 5% boric acid solution, you need to mix 2.5 teaspoons of the boric acid powder with one cup of water.
  2. Mix all the ingredients in the jar, except the water.
  3. Add in the water until the mixture reaches a paste-like consistency.
  4. Cover the jar and punch holes in the top. Leave in places where you know the ants travel.
  5. Note: you can replace the peanut butter and honey with any other sweetener, such as molasses or corn syrup; just make sure the amount of boric acid solution matches the amount of sweetener.
